Clothes of Louis II. and Mary of Habsburg According to tradition King Louis I the Great and his wife wore these clothes at their wedding and gave them to the Mariazell site of pilgrimage, which they founded, where they were kept till 1928. It is more likely that this unique set of early vestment pieces belonged to King Louis II and his wife, Queen Mary, as their wedding dress from 1522. Queen Mary on her way to her betrothal, was endangered on a ship on the Rhine river, and she attributed her salvation to the Madonna of Mariazell. The Habsburgs also had a great devotion to the Mariazell pilgrimage site, which symbolized the ties between Austria and Hungary. The robe of the queen was made according the late 15th century fashion of Burgundy from Italian silk damask. "Louis was a slender youth; he stood out from among his contemporaries on account of his physical beauty. He had such a virtuous character that, had he lived longer, we would definitely have been a very good and excellent ruler. He was very meek and not rough in the slightest. He was receptive to all that is good and noble and tried to attain it voluntarily. Otherwise, in using weapons, riding, hunting and in other activities suitable to noble young men, he was diligent and besides that he loved truth and was pious; he could keep secrets entrusted to him very well" |
